The Origin and Evolution of the Double Ninth Festival
The Double Ninth Festival originated from ancient harvest festivals. According to the *Lüshi Chunqiu*, the custom of offering sacrifices to the Heavenly Emperor and ancestors in September existed as early as the Warring States period. It gradually became widespread during the Western Han Dynasty and, after the Tang Dynasty, integrated various customs to solidify into a traditional festival.
The number "nine-nine" is a homophone for "long-lasting", embodying people's beautiful wishes for longevity and health, and carrying the traditional virtues of respecting, honoring, and loving the elderly.
